Dear Fellow Gardener,
Have you ever wondered why some
properties seem to have so many butterflies and hummingbirds yet
none seem to visit yours? Is it just coincidence or is
there something attracting them to those other areas that you
do not have?
Well, the truth is that there
is something attracting our fluttering friends to those areas.
You too can attract them to your yard by creating
your very own garden designed specifically to attract butterflies
and hummingbirds.
Interested
but not quite sure how to get started?
Well, you’ve come to the right
place.
There is much more to designing a
butterfly and hummingbird garden than selecting your favorite
plants and putting them in the ground. For instance…
- Where should the garden grow?
Sun? Shade?
- How should it be designed?
Without a carefully designed plan, your garden may end up overgrown
and out of control, or lacking the beautiful variety of colors
you’ve envisioned.
- What are the best plants and vines to use to attract
and feed butterflies and hummingbirds?
You want to insure that what you plant will act as a magnet
to attract butterflies and hummingbirds while also providing
the food they need. Otherwise, you may end up sadly disappointed.
- What are the most important steps in any garden to
insure healthy plants and flowers?
HINT: it’s not available at your local garden store.
- What 3 things must be provided in your garden to make
it a suitable habitat?
Without these, your garden will not be a success, leaving you
disheartened.
- How will you control pests in the garden?
You can expect some type of insect pest to attack plants in
your garden. That’s nature. But not every insect in the
garden is the enemy. The trick to good gardening is identifying
the bad bugs early and letting the good bugs do their thing.
As you can see, there are many things
to consider before getting started.
Proper
planning and preparation is essential for creating a healthy,
active garden.
With a little extra thought and planning,
you can increase the “now you see it, now you don’t”
activity adding to the enchantment of your garden.
For many years I’ve enjoyed
watching hummingbirds feast from the feeders I’ve strategically
placed for best viewing. I love watching them zip back and forth
from the tree in our backyard to the flowering vine on our fence,
or as they hover over the flowers in my garden. They are fascinating
to watch.
Do
you know why they are called hummingbirds?
It’s because their wings beat so fast that they make
a humming sound. In normal flight, their wings beat about
70 beats per second, and during courtship flights, a male’s
wings can beat up to 200 times per second! |
I also love the magic that butterflies
have added to my gardens.
My interest in butterflies actually
started with a not so happy beginning when I one day, several
years ago, noticed that my favorite new vine had been stripped
of its beautiful flowers. It was covered with caterpillars
and they were destroying my vine! I thought it was too far
gone to be saved – I was very upset. Shortly thereafter
I started noticing an abundance of beautiful butterflies in my
garden. It was then I realized that those pesky little caterpillars
that were on my vine had turned into these beautiful butterflies
that were so cool to watch.
My vine came back full of
blooms the next year and I watched the process take place all
over again. I actually planted more of the same vines
just so I’d have more butterflies.
I’ve been an avid gardener
for over 15 years focusing mainly on drought tolerant gardening
and gardens for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds –
I love the way they make your garden come alive with all
their entertaining activity! I enjoy sharing what I’ve
learned, and continue to learn, with others who enjoy the same.

INFO…
A recently released University of Arkansas study found that
women 50 and older who gardened at least once a week had higher
bone density than those who jogged, walked, swam or did aerobics. |
I’ve done extensive research
and continue to look for new resources of information to add to
my gardening knowledge and skill. I’ve also been a member
of an organic gardening group for over 8 years. I am passionate
about gardening the natural way.
To get off
to a good start with building your fluttering garden, you need
a thorough resource providing all the gardening information
required to insure the best results.
When I first started gathering information,
I had difficulty finding one source that provided everything I
needed to know. I spent “many” hours over the past
several years compiling information from every possible resource
I came in contact with. I realized that with all the time and
energy I spent to collect all of this valuable information, I
could save many others from having to do the same. So, I’ve
combined all my notes and information from years of research into
one e-book providing the
most comprehensive gardening resource available specializing in
attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.

Often the low pH is mentioned
but they also provide gentle low levels of N-P-K and many
trace minerals. Even old coffee can be used as liquid fertilizer. |

- about the conflicts that can arise in your garden
- the best methods of weed control

TIP:
Fireplace ashes are an excellent ingredient for the compost
pile and good as a soil amendment if not overused ...
They are basically trees with
the carbon burned away. These wood ashes are a concentration
of mineral salts, including nitrogen, potassium, sodium, calcium,
magnesium, along with many trace minerals. Don’t toss those
fireplace ashes – instead, mix them into the compost pile
or if you have sandy acid soil, use fireplace ashes directly
on the soil. |
